Moxy KyotoA bite at the bar before Gion Matsuri.
ABOUT THIS STAY
A compact room,
and a playful lobby bar.
I booked on the day during Gion Matsuri. The room was small, but I still like Moxy’s playful design. Before heading to the festival, I had drinks and dinner at the lobby bar.

A pink logo that fits into Kyoto.ARRIVAL & LOBBY
The exterior was understated and in keeping with Kyoto’s streets. Inside, we were greeted with “Hi” in English. Having just returned from Sydney, we nearly checked in in English, too. A decorative fireplace and a large bear made the playful lobby fun.
My first words on opening the door: “So small!”UME / QUEEN ROOM
There was no upgrade this time, and I stayed in an Ume Queen room. Everything fitted compactly around the bed. The desk folded away, and a small empty refrigerator sat beneath the tea set. For one night, I had no particular complaints.
A pink hair dryer, in Moxy style.BATHROOM
The bathroom was compact, too, simply finished with white tiles and black fittings. The hair dryer was Moxy pink. A seat in the shower was a small but welcome detail.
Moxy Pink before the festival.LOBBY BAR / DINNER
My welcome drink was Moxy Pink, which I had also tried in Sydney. This version looked a little more orange. For dinner, I used a ticket received during this stay and ordered sukiyaki beef rice, Hanayama udon and onion rings. The food was ordinary, but the onion rings were good.

Small pleasures in the lobby at night.MOXY AFTER DARK
Colorful lanterns and a library with a flamingo. There were things around the hotel that made me reach for the camera. The pink logo outside stood out after dark, too.
Breakfast left me wanting a little more.BREAKFAST
When I went to breakfast around 9 a.m., there was very little food. Staff were replenishing it, but it disappeared quickly. I liked the chocolate-chip bread and yogurt. Honestly, I would have been happier if more food had remained.
